Welcome to Macrocosm, the first ever UCSC COSMOS newspaper that is entirely student run. This website will be updated weekly with the latest articles that provide all members of the COSMOS community with insight into the program throughout the 2019 session.
Inaugural Editorial
Congratulations on the inaugural issue of Macrocosm, the UCSC COSMOS electronic newsletter that is run entirely by student volunteers from the program participants. This year marks the 20th anniversary of UCSC COSMOS, and I cannot think of a better way to commemorate this historical moment. Over the past two decades, thousands of highly talented students from almost every corner of the Golden State have gathered on our beautiful hilltop campus and immersed themselves in an intensive four-week learning experience that is unseen in a typical high school. Our mission is simple and clear: to make UCSC a cradle of next-generation STEM leaders. For California, the nation and the world! The Class of 2019 welcomes 232 students selected from 1500+ applications. I have full confidence that this cohort will continue the success of the program. To me, this program belongs to the students, and it is only fitting that they tell the stories about the program from their own perspectives. This year is also the 20th of my faculty career. Thus far, I have had the privilege of teaching and working with a large number of students at all levels (high school, undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral). COSMOS is always special. After all, who would not enjoy being surrounded by high-achieving students? The 2019 COSMOS has started, and the students have been busy attending lectures, performing research, making friends, and enjoying a range of recreational activities. This sounds like school, but in fact, it is COSMOS.
