COSMOS Dance
Alvin Cheng and Kevin Zhang
Cosmos was coming to a bittersweet end. After finishing up our presentations and dressing up, we were invited to an 80’s themed dance in the MPR. This two-hour dance was our last evening activity of COSMOS. As we entered, a glow stick was given to us and we were greeted with a huge kaleidoscope animation followed by upbeat music. A myriad of enticing treats and beverages attracted the attention of eager students. Students began to congregate as the RAs played music ranging from K-pop to mainstream hip-hop. However, as time went on, a large circle began to form around several people who danced in the center. One boy breakdanced to the loud music while others displayed their Fortnite dancing techniques. On the stage, the RAs passionately danced while groups of students took pictures in front of the backdrop. As time flew by, everyone could feel the heat. Sweat began to form on the backs of all of us. To make things worse, we ran out of cups in the middle of the dance, leaving many poor COSMOS students dehydrated. Despite this, we kept going until the night was over. A video named “2019 UCSC COSMOS RECAP” (sub to Macrocosm Videos!) was shown towards the end. Refusing to let the dance end, students began to chant “one more song” many times, and the RAs relented. A conga line formed as the speakers played the last song “Dancing Queen”. It was a fulfilling day for all as the final day of COSMOS lingered in our minds.
